Travel and Credit Card Tips

Brother Gabriel Eiben has sent us some good tips for travel and credit cards.

1. We have been double-charged repeatedly on our credit cards since arriving here on Pohnpei. Thankfully we were able to dispute the charges electronically, and all the charges were removed. Having frequent internet access to your credit card account is important, and double-checking the transactions on a regular basis is a good idea.

2. While traveling on deputation or furlough, becoming a member of a local zoo or aquarium can get you free or discounted access to others all over the U.S. This makes outings with the family much more financially-friendly. For example, a one-year family membership to the NC Aquarium will cost a family $75, but will get you free or discounted access to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums which includes over 150 zoos and aquariums across the country.  This free admission is typically limited to two adults and two children under the age of 18. This membership fee may also be tax deductible. This would be a great educational resource for families homeschooling on the road.

3. Along those same lines, becoming a member of a local museum can save you money at other museums as well. For example, a family of six can purchase a one year membership at the NC Transportation Museum for $80. Since they are part of the Association of Science-Technology Centers,  you instantly gain free or discounted access to museums and science centers all over the U.S. 

4. Depending on your field of service, obtaining a credit card linked to an airline that services your field can be a real help with airline ticket costs. Currently, United Airlines had a special offer to spend $3,000 in the first three months and receive 35,000 airline miles. As you pay for gas, meals, and lodging on the road, those airline miles can add up quickly.
